Wise Words – Be Still
There has been plenty in the news these past few days that has brought anxiety and tension at the prospect that there could be a new encounter of war in the Middle East. The idea of war, or even potential war or short term conflict, can shake the steadiest person. Even the stock market seemed to falter for a bit at the uncertainty of what might lie ahead. So these words we offer today are a remedy to any situation for us, your Two Chums and ones we rely on often…but truth be told, probably not often enough.
These words and remembering to be still and remember…to yet again know…who is God, are a great comfort.
There is a wonderful line from the movie Rudy…a true story of a young man who desperately wanted to play football for Notre Dame but who was unlikely in every way to realize that dream. At one point Rudy seeks out his priest to ask him what he should do. He implores the priest for answers to his dilemma and asks him how he can make his dream come true. The priest responds with some words about Rudy trusting in himself and trusting that there is a divine plan. But Rudy pushes him further until the priest explains to Rudy that he doesn’t have all the answers. He tells him there are only two things he really knows for sure… “There is a God…and I am not him.”
None of us are. That is why it is so vital that we take the time to be still and know that He is God. That being still and knowing puts things into perspective. It puts everything in its right place. It puts us in our right place and reminds us how small we are and at the same time how significant that God Himself would care to remind us who He is and who we are and quiet our anxious thoughts. No matter what difficulty you may be facing, what anxious thought is pestering you, what fear is gripping you or keeping you from moving forward, now might be just the right time to “Be still and know that I am God”.
