Who Knew?
Born in 1791 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Samuel Morse was an eccentric youth.
By the time he headed off to Yale University, Morse was interested in two things: electricity and painting. Morse’s parents weren’t thrilled about his interest in painting, but they eventually helped fund his trip across the pond to England in 1811, where he studied under painter Washington Allston.
Though he was relatively successful in art, painting didn’t pay the bills quite as well as Morse might have liked.
He took to inventing, too, and focused on telegraph technology. Morse eventually secured congressional funding to build the first telegraph line in the United States. Connecting Baltimore and Washington, D.C., the line was completed in 1844. And, thus, the Morse Code was born!
