Wedding Season!
Yes, this time of year reminds of weddings and so we thought it would be fun to look at Elizabeth Taylor’s many wedding dresses!
Elizabeth Taylor’s First Wedding Dress
In 1950, Elizabeth Taylor married her first husband, Conrad “Nicky” Hilton (the great-uncle of the infamous Paris and Nicky Hilton). Taylor was only 18 years old at the time, and her wedding dress was designed by Hollywood costume designer Helen Rose. Rose also designed Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, and went on to design Taylor’s outfits for Father of the Bride and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Nicky proposed to the young actress with a $10,000, 4-carat diamond platinum ring.

Taylor’s Second Wedding Dress
In 1952, three months after her divorce, Taylor said “I do” to Michael Wilding, a British actor 20 years her senior. Wilding proposed with a sapphire ring, which started the trend of sapphire engagement rings at the time. The two married in a low-key ceremony in London.
Rose designed Taylor’s wedding dress a second time around, this time forgoing the classic white dress for a flared suit with white lapels. The two would stay married for five years and have two sons together. (Photo: Evening Standard / Stringer via Getty)
Taylor’s Third Wedding Dress
In 1957, Taylor would walk down the aisle to film producer Mike Todd, one of the greatest loves of her life. Todd proposed with a door knocker-sized emerald engagement ring that clocked in at 29 carats. The couple had a small ceremony in Spain, but their big wedding was in Acapulco, Mexico.
For the occasion, Taylor wore an organza dress, complete with a draped hood that acted as a veil. Debbie Reynolds was her matron of honor, which was sadly ironic as Taylor would soon marry Reynold’s husband. (Photo: Bettmann via Getty)
Taylor’s Fourth Wedding Dress
Taylor’s marriage to Todd would be the only marriage that wouldn’t end in divorce, as the film producer died in a private jet crash in 1958, just one year after their vows. Turning to her best friend, Reynolds, and her husband, Eddie Fisher, for support, Taylor fell in love with Fisher while grieving.
Just one year later, Taylor and Fisher married. In 1959, Fisher proposed to the actress with a 40-carat engagement bracelet that featured 50 diamonds, and the two married in a synagogue in Las Vegas. For the event, Taylor wore an olive silk dress complete with a hood. (Photo: Sunset Boulevard via Getty)
Taylor’s Fifth Wedding Dress
After having a daughter with Todd and being married one year, Taylor met the second love of her life, Richard Burton. The pair met while on the set of Cleopatra, and became known as “Liz and Dick.” Their first marriage to each other was in Montreal in 1964.
To commemorate the event, Cleopatra’s costume designer, Irene Sharaff, designed Taylor’s marigold yellow babydoll dress. She paired it with a yellow bouquet and a flower-woven waist-length braid with lilies of the valley and white hyacinths.
Burton didn’t get Taylor an engagement ring. Instead, the actor bought Taylor a platinum-set Bulgari pendant with an 18.61-carat emerald surrounded with diamonds. Taylor wore the gift during the ceremony. (Photo: Hulton Archive via Getty)
Taylor’s Sixth Wedding Dress
Burton and Taylor divorced in 1974 after 10 tempestuous years together, only to remarry a year later in 1975. The media often called their relationship “the marriage of the century.” The two held their ceremony in Botswana, and Taylor wore a tie-dye Gina Fratini dress with feathers. For the ceremony, Burton gifted Taylor the Grand Duchess of Russia’s emeralds, which included earrings, a bracelet, and a necklace set in diamonds and emeralds.

Taylor’s Seventh and Eighth Wedding Dresses
A year after marrying Burton, Taylor married John Warner in 1976. Without witnesses, the couple married on his cattle farm in Virginia, and Taylor wore a violet cashmere dress, a tweed and fur coat, and a matching turban. Fast-forward six years, and the couple split in 1982.
This leads us to Taylor’s eighth and final wedding dress. In 1991, Taylor married Larry Fortensky, a construction worker whom she met while in rehab at the Betty Ford Center. They wed on Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch in California, and Taylor wore a $25,000 pale yellow lace Valentino gown. The two would stay married for five years. (Photo: People Magazine)
While your Two Chums love the idea of “happily ever after”, it certainly is quite the fashion show, right?
