Today Is The Day!
Has Christmas already passed or is it another date?
According to the Julian calendar — which many Orthodox Christians observe — January 7, tomorrow, is the date to remember Jesus Christ’s birth.
This date is also known as the “Old Christmas Day.” A significant number of Orthodox Christians fast before the date; the Christmas meal signals the end of fasting. Additionally, those who celebrate this holiday are unlikely to prioritize the giving of gifts that many cultures partake in on Christmas in December.
On Orthodox Christmas, white cloth is used on dinner tables as a symbol of purity and the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in. Straw is also used to symbolize where Jesus was born and candles are lit to connote the light of Christ.
So there we have it! Merry Christmas!
