This Was Temporary?!
The wrought-iron lattice of the Eiffel Tower was built to headline the 1889 World’s Fair, but the engineering masterpiece — named after its architect, Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel — was intended to be temporary.
Plans to demolish the landmark in 1909 were abandoned when city officials recognized its value as a radiotelegraph station.
The Eiffel Tower played an important role in both World Wars, and ensured its permanent status overlooking central Paris.
It has become synonymous with Paris, for sure. Amazing to hear that it was meant to be temporary!
