The Common Made Uncommon – The Dishtowel
What could be more of a common household item than say…the dish towel? But we have some ideas to use those common towels in new ways! The common dishtowel. We use them for all sorts of things:
- Shine your sink
- Wipe your hands
- Wipe down your counters
- Dishtowels can be used to cover rising bread dough
- Folded dish towel can be a hot pad for hot pots and pans
- Dishtowels can be used as a drying rack for washed dishes or to dry the dishes
- Dishtowels can be used for a facial
- Dishtowels can be used as bibs
- Dishtowels can be wrapped around an ice pack
- Dishtowels can be used to polish silver
From time to time we want to give you new uses for things that are common to all of us and that every household needs or already has. Here are some uncommon ideas for using that very common dishtowel:
Instead of a placemat or table runner, make individual runners with oversized dishtowels. The fringed ones are especially nice for this purpose. They are often available at Home Goods or Marshalls at very reasonable prices.
Need a fun gift for a bride-to-be or even a housewarming? We think presenting ordinary things in an extraordinary way can make all the difference in gift giving. Wrap same colored, but different patterned, dishtowels in individual rolls and then tie them together with a ribbon to create layers of a “cake”. Use a single one as a fleurish for the top. Place on a pretty cake stand and you have a fun and very useful gift any bride or new homeowner would love to receive.
For a casual gathering use a dishtowel as a napkin. Especially when eating BBQ or other messy foods having the oversized “napkin” that a dishtowel provides is really useful for your guests. These particular towels are from IKEA and are very inexpensive. Usually they are less than $1 each. We have even dyed them yellow to go with an outdoor table setting that included a red and yellow tablecloth. At that price you could have many and dye them lots of fun colors!
Use a pretty dishtowel to Wrap a new cookbook or even kitchen journal as a shower or birthday gift.
And here is a favorite way of your Two Chums for using dishtowels:
