Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake
Whatever else goes on this weekend, Sunday is the national day for celebrating our fathers. And what could be better for doing that than to offer your father, or the father of your children something sweet and delicious?
There are few things that are universally enjoyed but Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake is one of them. I have NEVER met a man (or a woman or child for that matter) who didn’t like this rich chocolatey, moist, fudgey desssert. And as if that wasn’t enough….it just couldn’t be any more simple to make…..a boxed mix isn’t any easier!
Serve this yummy cake as dessert with your favorite Father’s Day meal or make one to give to your father or husband that is just for him….wrap it up in cellophane, tie it with a pretty bow and let this be your gift…..there will be no disappointment I promise!
If you make this cake as your gift, remember to tell your father or husband that you are offering him something that reminds you of him…something warm and sweet, that makes you smile 🙂 Hearing that, he can’t help but be filled with love, joy and abundant living!
Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake
Stir together:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
Beat together in another bowl:
2 eggs
½ cup sour cream
In a pan melt :
2 sticks of butter
¼ cup cocoa
1 cup water
Pour butter mixture over dry ingredients and then add egg/sour cream mixture and stir everything up well. Pour into a buttered 9” x 13” baking dish and bake in a preheated, 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until sides of cake begin to pull away from the pan.
While it is warm add frosting. Allow frosting to set up, cut cake in squares and prepare for a little bite of heaven. 🙂
Frosting
Boil together:
1 stick of butter
¼ cup cocoa
6 Tablespoons of milk
Pour this over 1 lb. of powdered sugar. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and stir to mix. Pour over warm cake and allow to cool so frosting “sets up”. This is like a layer of delicious fudge over the top of this very moist and very delicious cake!

I love your all recipes but this one has absolutely made my day. I have been searching for this recipe forever and now I have it. I think I’ll add a few chopped pecans to the frosting and it will be just like my Texas college roommate’s mother made it. Thanks y’all! Sharon
Oh Sharon I am thrilled that you have this recipe now…..enjoy every bite!
YUM!!!
That looks sooooo good, I’m going to have my mom make that!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me know how you like it Logan….I’m betting you will LOVE it!
Hi Robin and Jackie,
Just a question – how many do you think this serves on average? 12-15? Also, sounds like this cake cannot be taken out of the pan and frosted, am i correct? Sounds so yummy.
Always love my two chums!
Linda
Hi Linda. It will serve 12 very generously and 15 nicely. It is a very rich cake with frosting that is like a layer of fudge so you don’t need to serve huge pieces to make it a satisfying treat. You are right in assuming that you don’t take it out of the pan before frosting it becaue the frosting starts out pretty liquid and then firms up as it cools. You can cut it into squares and serve it stacked on a cake plate with pieces piles up if you want a “prettier” presentation. Let us know what you think when you try it 🙂
