Sugar Coated Holidays
Need an easy, timeless idea for a centerpiece or table decoration? We’ve got that and it is sugar coated!
Of all the different things we have tried to make as centerpieces or holiday decorations over the years…and there have been MANY…for some reason sugar coating fruit was never among them. Until now! Perhaps it always seemed like it would be too complicated. It is actually quite the opposite. For a few cents and only a few minutes of your time you can make something that could look magazine cover worthy.
All you need for this project is:
Slightly beaten egg whites
Sugar – the ordinary table kind
Fruit of course – apples, pears, plums, oranges, pomegranates, grapes – most any kind of smooth skinned fruit
Small glas ornaments or birds – optional
Sprigs of greenery – this could be clipped from your garden or even your Christmas tree or Hanukkah bush
Gather whatever pieces of fruit you are using along with your container, slightly beaten egg whites, sugar and greenery and ornaments. Using a pastry brush, brush all the fruit with the egg white being generous and making sure all the surface of the fruit is covered. If the fruit has a stem hold it by the stem as you are doing this. If it doesn’t, as in the case of an orange, hold it between two fingers as if you were holding it on its axis and rotate it as you apply the egg white.
Once the egg white is covering the surface of each piece of fruit, dip or roll each piece of fruit in white table sugar to coat. Place it on a rack to dry which should take about 30-45 minutes. Now arrange the fruit in the container you have chosen, adding in some sprigs of greenery and a couple of sparkly or glittered ornaments or birds, and you are all set!
This promises to be a “sweet” tradition you will make year after year!
