She Left Us So Much – Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy
If we had to pick five people in the world who had left their mark on fashion, certainly Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy would be one of those five!
Jackie Kennedy, who became known as “Jackie O” after her marriage to Aristotle Onassis, left her mark on the world, to say the least. When her husband, John F. Kennedy, became President and they moved into the White House, she completely re-did that Presidential home and made it a place that everyone wanted to see. Apparently, it was rather drab when they took up residence there but she quickly changed that!
And, her amazing sense of style was reflected in the way she dressed.
As soon as Jackie arrived in Washington, all lights were on her! Ladies were imitating her style from the moment she set foot on the public’s stage – much like the “Catherine Middleton” effect of today! The first thing that was markedly “hers” was the pillbox hat and EVERYONE had to have one!
Jackie Kennedy had a great way of making a casual outfit look very chic with the addition of a silk scarf or a strand or two of pearls. In fact, she made a three-stranded pearl necklace a “must have” for all ladies – and, come to find out, Jackie’s was faux! She very often completed an outfit with a beautiful silk scarf – perhaps around her head or neck or tied to her handbag. Jackie certainly was a person who believed that “less is more” and demonstrated the meaning of those few words elegantly and with much grace!
Jackie sported black or white or a combination of black and white with great flare. She was often seen donning a black turtleneck. In fact, one of her “go to” outfits was white jeans with a black turtleneck (not tucked in).
For the First Lady to go “sleeveless” was quite a bold move but make the move she did and, of course, every other lady followed suit. Her wardrobe was full of sleeveless, A-line dresses.
And, oh, we could not talk of Jackie Kennedy Onassis without mentioning quite loudly, the large sunglasses that she made popular in the 1960’s and which are now again seen adorning ladies’ faces. Jackie said that being behind those large sunglasses gave her a chance to look at people without being noticed.
What a lady! Full of grace and sophistication. Yes, a style icon she was and continues to be. We have her to thank for a lot!

Good story. Oddly enough it was her father-in-law, Joseph P. Kennedy, that suggested the fashion designer for her as First Lady. It was Oleg Cassini, Russian born- coming from a titled family who studied fashion in France before becoming an American citizen and moving to Hollywood designing for several popular Hollywood stars. He knew fabric and how lighting influenced the look on camera. As a result, Jacqueline was always picture perfect! Joe Kennedy felt the First Lady should have an American designer dress her and firmly suggested she hire Cassini. It was a pairing as unique as Audrey Hepburn and Givency.
My mother adored her!
Great info Wendy! I knew she was dressed by Cassini but didn’t know the part about Joe Kennedy being the one to “suggest” him. And yes your mother surely did lLOVE Jackie and followed her every move 🙂
