Savvy Secrets – Peeling Potatoes
As you are well aware, Thanksgiving is only couple of days away. And no Thanksgiving dinner would be complete without that iconic and yummiest of sides, mashed potatoes. So today we have a Savvy Secret for making those mashed potatoes to go alongside your turkey. We came across this great idea on Instagram, gave it a try, and want to share it with you, our chums.
Whether you are having a crowd or just a small group at your Thanksgiving celebration, peeling potatoes is one job you could likely do without. We have a hack today that will eliminate or at least minimize peeling those potatoes.
Rather than peel and chop those potatoes you plan to cook and mash, make a slice all the way around each potato. Then without peeling, place potatoes in pot for cooking, cover them with water, add about 1 teaspoon salt for every 4 potatoes in the pan and boil potatoes for about 20-25 minutes. During cooking, the slit you made around the potato will become obvious as the potato swells during cooking and is taking on some of the water.
Test for doneness by piercing with a fork. When the fork goes into potato easily they are done. Remove from pan and allow to cool for 3-5 minutes or until you can handle them without burning your fingers. Then simply slide the potato peel off each potato and return them to the pan, add butter, milk or cream, and mash as you normally would.
Such an easy way to “peel” those spuds. Thank you to @itsnicolejaques for the inspiration!
