Savvy Secrets – Onions, Honey and Your Health


Some people consider natural or home remedies as crazy or hokey, but there are many that have stood the test of time because they work.  Onions, especially onions, and honey are among them.  Onions are an ancient vegetable that have been used medicinally for thousands of years.  In times of plagues they were known to protect people from from infection, today they are known to have germ killing biochemicals.

Their uses are several.  You may have heard of some of these from your grandmother or an older friend or relative. Here is a list of some of the benefits of onions:

  1. They are rich in calcium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamin A
  2. They have been known to provide relief from colds and flu. Mix equal parts of fresh onion juice and honey.  Taking this mixture helps breathing difficulties due to colds.  Slice onions very thinly and spread each slice with honey.  Allow to sit until a natural syrup forms.  Take this syrup by the teaspoon as needed for relief.
  3. You can also take this onion/honey syrup as a natural sleep inducer when sleep is difficult.  A spoonful before bed can help you enjoy a good night’s sleep.
  4. Extract 2 ounces of onion juice and drink it in a cup of tea, three times a day, if you are suffering from a cold or the flu.
  5. Eating onions, either raw or cooked, aid in circulation, improve kidney function, improve digestion, and are valuable in the prevention of high blood pressure.

And may we add that raw, sauted or grilled, they are rather delicious served on a burger or steak.  So now you have some new reasons to enjoy the common onion 🙂
