Sandwich?

We eat them all the time and they have the strange name of “sandwich”. Where did that name come from?

John Montagu did not realize what a legacy he would leave! Right up until present time, we use his name for something we eat so often.

Born in 1718, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich was the eponymous (giving one’s name to something) inventor of this lunchroom staple.

A busy British lord, John Montagu did not want to be bothered to leave his work — or his card games — to have a meal, so he asked his chef for something that he could easily eat at the table.

The solution was meat layered between bread. His new mealtime solution caught on and spread rapidly.

And there we have it!
