Perfect Rice…EVERYTIME!
How many different recipes or methods or ways of cooking rice have you read about or even tried?
Rice is a stable grain in almost any ethnic cuisine you can think of…Mexican…Indian…Chinese….Japanese….Korean…African…even Southern, just to name a few. When rice is well made it is truly a treat. But how many times have you had sticky, gummy rice that is clumped together and so starchy it almost isn’t even edible.
We’ve all seen any number of ways to cook rice. And probably tried lots of them. Sometimes our rice turns out well but sometimes, for no apparent reason, it doesn’t.
The other day speaking with someone who is a good cook, someone who cooks often and well, she was explaining why she was buying frozen cooked rice that she was going to microwave, at a price much higher than if she had just made some fresh at home. When asked about why she was buying frozen rice she looked frustrated and then complained that she was just fed up with ending up with gooey, sticky rice and feeling like a failure because she couldn’t count on making something as basic as rice well. (Unless you are making sushi rice, ending up with sticky rice is never what you are hoping to end up making.)
We suspect she is not alone. Many people simply use a rice cooker. This can be great…or not…depending on which one you have and what kind of job it actually does. It also isn’t great if all you want is only two or three servings.
SO….today we give you a method that we can literally say has NEVER failed. It produces soft individual grains that are just right. It makes perfect rice EVERYTIME!
Try this… we KNOW you will be happy and enjoy some of the best rice you’ve ever made 🙂
Easy Perfect Rice
2 cups of water
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups of rice
Over high heat, bring water and salt to the boil in a saucepan and then immediately add the rice. Stir once and then cover with the pan’s lid and lower the temperature to low heat and cook for 12 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow the rice to stand without lifting the lid for another 2-3 minutes. Lift the lid and stir to fluff the grains of rice. Serve immediately or add 1-2 Tablespoons of butter* and stir to melt and coat the rice. This will allow the rice to sit until you are already to serve it without the starch making it stick together. Enjoy!
* If you are lactose intolerant or prefer not to use butter, olive oil or coconut oil will also work well.
