Thanksgiving is over but pie eating isn’t. In fact, with the rest of the holidays just around the corner, there could be lots of yummy pie eating to be had….unless you happen to be gluten free. Most gluten free pie crust, like many gluten free baked products, tastes a bit like dry stale pastry at best and like cardboard at worst. We have an easy and delicious solution for that to share with our chums today!
At an Australian coffee house customers who can afford an extra cup of coffee pay for one and are given a post-it on which to write a note. They then place the note on a board where people who are struggling or have fallen on hard times can grab the note and exchange it for a cup of coffee.
Where we live in Southern California, people have been putting their Christmas decorations out earlier this year. We think the feeling is that we all need those wonderful lights to cheer us up, to keep us sparkling!
In speaking with other chums the one element of Thanksgiving dinner that often goes overlooked or perplexes the hostess is what, if any, kind of salad to serve with the meal. To be sure there are any number of options but with all the other veggies and yummy side dishes included in a Thanksgiving feast, salad seems often to be the “red headed step child” as it were to the meal. So today we offer a suggestion that will be both simple to prepare and tasty on Thanksgiving or on any other Thursday for supper.
As the holiday season approaches, we will all certainly be enjoying more treats and baked goods of all kinds. If you, or someone in your family has a problem with gluten, you know baking things that everyone can eat and that don’t taste like cardboard, can be a challenge. We have some good info for you today that just might help you with your (GF) gluten free baking needs.
We are all seeming to be keeping things cleaner these days. It may not be Spring but still we clean. We wipe our hands and surfaces we touch regularly, we wash our sheets and bed covers regularly, but…
Thanksgiving is just two weeks from today. Depending on where you live and what the Covid restrictions are in your area your family gathering on this treasured holiday may look very different than it usually would.
TV game shows will never be the same. Yesterday the world said good bye to the consummate host of a TV game show. Alex Trebek, the host of Jeopardy for 36 years, passed on after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
This year of 2020 has been a tough one in one way or another for everybody. In some ways it feels like it has gone on forever, but in other ways, it seems impossible that the holidays are just around the corner again. Believe it or not Thanksgiving is just 3 weeks from yesterday.
With all the stories in the news about people who are angry, disgruntled, and acting out in negative ways, it is a gift to all of us to hear a story about a truly good guy.
Albert Einstein is considered one of the greatest people who ever trod the earth. He left us with a rich legacy. Because of him, a very different world was seen by the time he left the world. The following might surprise you!
It is hard to believe that Halloween is around the corner and this year, it will look a little different than other years, for sure. But we feel sure that you will all have some fun with it tomorrow. Here are a few fun facts about Halloween.
Back in the 16th century, the majority of Europeans couldn’t read. In fact, an estimated 61 percent of men in Norwich, near London, couldn’t even write their own name! For shopkeepers and craftspeople, this widespread illiteracy was something of a marketing problem: How could they advertise their businesses to a public that couldn’t read?
It’s no secret that we have come to a difficult place on any number of fronts in our country. While the issues are serious, nothing should be beyond a bit of wisdom and sometimes the wise thing is to inject a bit of humor. We came across something from a chum with a great sense of humor and got a good chuckle. We thought you might get a little midweek chuckle too.
Queen Elizabeth II is one of the richest royals in the world with a net worth of $600 million, but some of her spending habits might surprise you. While the queen definitely splurges on certain luxuries like helicopter travel, she can also be very thrifty.
We all (well, I speak for a lot of chums of ours) love black and white…its makes quite a statement but have you ever wondered if zebras are black and white for any reason?
Ever have those days when you just can’t seem to please the people in your life? We came across a bit of humor to help you cope and a word of advice for those you’re attempting to make happy.
Exploring Christopher Columbus facts is a great way to travel back in time and learn about history. Fun Christopher Columbus facts for children are one of the best ways to get them excited about the history of the New World.
But, because Columbus lived so long ago, primary evidence of some Christopher Columbus facts has been lost.
We do know:
Cristoforo Colombo is the real name of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa (in 1451) and traveled to England when he was 25
Christopher Columbus moved from Italy to Portugal in 1477
Columbus taught himself three languages
He was very religious and wrote a book near the end of his life called The Book of Prophecies
Spices were as valuable s gold in the 1500’s and were kept under lock and key
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain funded his now famous voyage across the world
He made four trips across the Atlantic to the Americas
Christopher Columbus is a household name, certainly, and there are many so-called facts floating around (and some being drowned) about him. It is rather fun to think back to when people thought the world was flat and if you went all the way to the other side, you would fall off. Thankfully, that belief has been debunked and here we are believing that the world is round.
Based on this, one has to wonder, really, what other so-called “facts” we believing and basing our lives on, that might be mere fiction.
Cake and coffee! This is to go with that cappuccino you read about yesterday. Two days ago we told you the story behind Pound Cake. Today we share a recipe for the original pound cake that became so popular.
It’s finally Fall. One of the sweet benefits of the season are all the wonderful apples that we can find everywhere in Autumn. Next to the pumpkin, the apple is the fruit most people associate with this time of the year. So many lovely varieties to choose from, but what kind of apple is best raw to eat and which ones are good for cooking or baking? Today we can help with some answers to that question.
You may not be going to your place of work right now, many of us are still working from home. And work has a way of taking over our lives at times, even these times. Maybe especially these times, in our search to achieve some semblance of “normalcy”, work can take over our lives. But there is something we all need to remember and today’s Words of Wisdom are the perfect reminder.
Apart from everything else we do today, we want to make sure we acknowledge and remember what happened on this fateful day 19 years ago. We remember those whose lives were cut short, who on what started out as an ordinary Tuesday, became an extraordinary part of our history. We cannot afford to ever forget the brave men and women who rushed into those two buildings as others were rushing out. May we always, ALWAYS be grateful to them and all those who risk their own lives on our behalf.
We remember the heros of 9/11 and we are very grateful indeed.
This time of year we are all making that transition from summer into fall. Nothing for any of us is the way we usually experience it. Many kids are learning remotely from home, and adults are also working from home quite often. Most of us are generally spending a lot more time at home so making it enjoyable is a must. Our surroundings can help us feel a sense of security and calm when everything else feels a bit unpredictable and chaotic.
And, speaking of Audrey Hepburn (yesterday’s post) whose first love was ballet, do you think you know where ballet first started? France, maybe Italy or Russia?
We loved the post we put in today and put it in thinking that it was a true story.
We are so grateful that one of our dear chums who lives in Des Moines, sent us this:
“Love this story, and have heard it told many times and in its varied forms. Being from Des Moines, please know that our local Iowa Methodist Hospital (now Unity Point) John Stoddard Cancer Center is actually named after a prominent engineer who gave millions to see it built after receiving his own cancer treatment at Iowa Methodist. When the original work of fiction about a ‘Teddy Stallard’ and his inspirational teacher was written, it somehow later evolved and gained momentum with even more fiction about the Stoddard connection. And yet, still a lovely read with a sweet message.”
Always wishing to be transparent, we share this with you and have to agree with our chum – it is “still a lovely read with a sweet message”.
It’s a fair question since for most people it is just a way to mark the end of summer and the start of a new fall/school season. But beyond the BBQs and family get togethers, why do we celebrate it really?
To say that John Cassabria is an animal lover is an understatement. He grew up surrounded by pets and is currently the proud owner of four dogs, four cats and even a pet snake.
It is no secret that we live in contentious times. As November 3rd approaches there is no shortage of opinions and feelings about the coming elections.
When I was quite a little girl and visiting London for the first time, my darling father took me to the Regent’s Park Zoo, a wonderful zoo in the middle of London. The very first place he wanted to visit was the ant colony and for a very specific reason.
Ever thought about learning to knit? Right now when we are all at home more might just be a great time to start. “But HOW to start?” you might be thinking. We found a great tutorial we are sharing with you today.
Although Friday is the end of the week and, for most people, drives us into the weekend, it still needs fortifying at times. This one is especially lovely.
One of the joys of summer is the sweet juicy produce that one can find in nearly any market. Blueberries are everywhere right now and using them to make this easy 3 ingredient jam will of course be a summer favorite!
What we are sharing here below appeared on a bulletin board in a shop the other day and we knew we had to share it with our chums. As we’ve said many times we think laughter is the best medicine for WHATEVER ails you!
Today we have yet another TV show recommendation for you. OK we aren’t pretending to be Siskel and Ebert, but we believe this is a program you will truly enjoy.
In summer we are always looking for something to make for dinner that is quick, easy, and most importantly, really tasty. This chicken bowl will fill the bill.
Something we found interesting came to our attention this week. While we are all hunkered down at home during the current pandemic, people are in their kitchens and cooking more than ever. It turns out they are turning to the internet for recipes. And can you guess what the #1 recipe searched for on the internet is?……..banana bread!
