Neighborly Notes
Every neighborhood, no matter whether yours is in Manhattan or Timbuktu, could use more kindness.
We saw this idea and wanted to pass it along as it seems like a great one.
Create a neighborhood lending library. We feel sure that you and all of your neighbors have books that you have read and no longer want which you could contribute. Put up a little shelving unit somewhere in the neighborhood out of the elements and make sure your neighbors know that it is there for them all to use.
Even though a lot of people buy books for their electronic devices, we know of many, many people who really still enjoy reading from a book, turning and feeling the pages as they go.
To quote that beloved Mr. Rogers, “Will you be my neighbor?”

We have several of these around town here in the Des Moines area. What fun they are! I just saw a new one up at the corner of the street where my Dad grew up, so am planning to stop back and place into it copy of his ‘Here’s To It!’ The neighbors will even be able to read a bit about their early neighborhood.
That is super, Jennifer! They will love reading “Here’s To It!”
I’ve also seen these used for sharing free boxed or canned food supplies. They are a lovely symbol and small act of an open hand and giving attitude.
We love that idea, Esther! Thank you for sharing!
I have a friend who put up a Little Lending Library for children. She had an outdoor party to introduce it to the neighborhood and served cupcakes. Kids can leave one of their own books to add to the collection or take one for their own. What a great idea.
Another great idea! Thanks, Lara!
