What taste can cats NOT taste?

According to a study done in 2005 at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia cats lack a so-called sweet gene.

And that is just fine with cats.

Unlike dogs, which have adapted over the centuries to now eat a diverse diet of meat, grains, fruits, and vegetables, cats are still very much carnivores. All they need to be healthy is meat.
