Keeping Winter Warm And Sweet
Perhaps nothing is more soothing and comforting on a cold day or night than a tasty cup of homemade hot cocoa. Last January we gave you an easy way to make hot chocolate with a homemade chocolate syrup to which you simply add warm milk. That recipe is here.
Today we have another equally tasty option for making a cup of homemade cocoa. This one is for a dry hot cocoa mix to which you add hot milk. The benefit of this recipe is that it keeps nicely in your cupboard, and travels well should you be taking a holiday weekend in the mountains, or wish to bring a hostess gift when visiting friends for the weekend.
Everyone loves hot cocoa, young and old alike. It warms and comforts you when you are alone, and makes a family night of watching a movie or playing a game, or working a puzzle, a celebration. Give it a try.
Hot Cocoa Mix
2 1/2 cups instant dry milk
2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa
1 tsp. fresh nutmeg
1/2 tsp. sea salt
Sift together all the ingredients. The cocoa mix will keep in the cupboard for up to 3 months in an airtight jar.
To make a cup of cocoa, place 1/4 cup mix in a mug. Heat 1 cup of whole milk. Add 1/4 cup of the hot water to the cocoa mix. Stir to combine, then add the 1 cup of hot milk and stir well. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows.
