Judging A Book By Its Cover
Tootsie. This movie is a classic. It is funny and poignant and is one of Dustin Hoffman’s finest performances. He has some very interesting thoughts about having played the role of a woman.
If you haven’t seen this movie in a while, or if you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it soon.
Recently in a clip from an interview with Dustin Hoffman, he talked candidly about his role in Tootsie as an out of work actor who wasn’t getting any roles as a man and so decided to try his luck with getting an acting job as a woman. What ensues is “laugh out loud” funny for the audience. But he says for him it was never a comedy. What portraying a woman taught Dustin Hoffman about himself as a man is very insightful.
How many times have all of us not made time for someone because of how he or she looked or how they didn’t look? We are all guilty of “judging the book by its cover” and possibly missing a great, if not life changing, story that someone we would least expect to have a good story might have to tell. We all need to be reminded from time to time to really see people in their humanity, to see beyond the exterior and get a look at the inside, at the real person. After all, isn’t that what we hope people will take the time to do with us?
Just think how much love and joy we could bring to others and ourselves by looking past what we think we see and looking at the real person in front of us, seeing their hearts. If we did, we could all be living much more abundant lives:)
