Food For The 4th
As you know Sunday is the day we celebrate our independence and the birth of our great nation. It’s the 4th of July! And there is hardly a food you can name that is more frequently associated with the 4th of July…more quintessentially American… than the hotdog.
There are probably as many ways to eat or “dress” a hotdog as there are people who eat them. But one that is really delicious and has begun to be featured in food circles everywhere is the Mexican dog.
If you live or have visited in the Southern California area, you know how readily you can find these delicious treats. In downtown Los Angeles there is a Mexican hotdog vendor on nearly every corner. As you walk down the street the aroma of hotdogs wrapped in bacon, and grilled to perfection in the portable hotdog carts, is everywhere, and delightfully so.
So today we offer you some ideas for adding toppings that will let you or guests create your own Mexican dogs to eat and enjoy this 4th of July.
Whether you choose to serve a variety of kinds of hotdogs at your 4th of July party, or want to try this yummy idea, we are hoping you all have a terrific time celebrating the birth this wonderful country. Happy Independence Day America!
Mexican Hot Dogs
We came across these Mexican hotdog photos and some suggestions for cooking and topping them from a post on the website girlandthekitchen.com.
The hotdogs in these photos are Hebrew National (our favorite dogs) and were cooked by first poaching them in water to thoroughly heat them through, and then grilling them to achieve that carmelized crisp skin that snaps when you take your first bite.
We like to add bacon when they are grilled but whether you like to add bacon or not, there are so many options for what you can add on top of these delicious dogs. Here is list of some options or suggestions to create your Mexican dog:
Cheese (queso fresco, grated pepper jack, grated cheddar, cotija )
Chipotle Mayo (stir together Best Foods mayo and Chipotle Tabasco sauce)
Cucumbers Salsa (chopped cucumbers, tomatoes and red onion)
Cilantro
Marinated jalapeño peppers
Chopped green onion
Avocado slices
Guacamole
Roasted corn
You may have more ideas of your own and we would welcome having you tell us what they are or sending us photos of your creations. Enjoy your hot dog, no matter what you adorn it with, and remember to celebrate with much gratitude for this very special country. Happy 4th of July dear chums!
