Elvis’s Rolls

Elvis cookbookMy darling chum, Jackie, and her dear husband, Dennis, were recently in Memphis.  Dennis loves Elvis (as do I) and while they were there he visited Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home.  The spoils of their trip for me resulted in an Elvis Cookbook.  The spoils for you, our chums, is a recipe for some very delicious rolls! I realized after typing the title of this post, Elvis’s Rolls, that you might well be thinking that I was referring to a car.  That reminded me ironically that, as a matter of fact, I once was in a crosswalk in Beverly Hills when who should be waiting for me and my cousin, Abbe, to cross the street but none other than “The King” himself, Elvis, in a white Rolls Royce.  My jaw dropped…and Abbe screamed so loudly and started to shake all over, that I thought she might pass out right there in the middle of the street.  Elvis sat patiently waiting for us to finally make our way across the street. He waved and smiled as we went and about then I was sure Abbe was going down. I’m not sure she has recovered yet!

But this entry is about rolls, the kind you eat….really buttery delicious rolls, which I made at Thanksgiving and I wanted to share the recipe with you all.
finished rolls
This cookbook is filled with some of Elvis’ favorite recipes.  Besides singing, Elvis really enjoyed eating….a man after my own heart!  These rolls, called Butterhorns, are really easy to make and even easier to eat.

So here’s to The King 🙂

Butterhorns

2 envelopes of active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 cups warm milk
8 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup butter, melted

In a small bowl combine the yeast and warm water, and set the mixture aside.  In a separate bowl, cream the butter with the 2/3 cup sugar.  Add the eggs, warm milk and yeast.  Add the flour and salt a little at a time and mix until the dough comes together.  Place the dough in a greased mixing bowl.   Cover and refrigerate for about 3 hours.

Remove the dough from the refrigerator and let it stand for about 15 minutes.  Turn the dough onto a floured  board and knead lightly.  Divide into 6 equal pieces.  Roll each piece into a circle about 9 inches in diameter.  Brush with melted butter.  Cut each circle into 8 wedges.   Starting with the wider end of each wedge roll up toward the point.  Place the horns on an ungreased baking sheet.  Let them rise for about 1 hour.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes.

These rolls look like Dick’s mom’s crescent rolls that I took over making every holiday when she passed away at the young age of 57. My family loves them!!! A little bit of Grammie D at every holiday! 🙂

They might very well be the same ones Crystal. It is sweet to think that Donna still has a place at your holiday table…she was such a special lady <3

These rolls were so delicious at Thanksgiving! None of my children even ate the cinnamon sticky buns that were on the table because they were too busy eating all the yummy Elvis rolls.
