Continuing on with our “Scottish” week, we found some interesting and fun facts about Scotland that we thought you all might enjoy.
1. Scotland is well known all over the world for its whisky. It is important to distinguish “whisky” from “whiskey” which is what is made in the United States and Ireland.
2. Sir Thomas Sean Connery, also known as James Bond, started his working life as a milkman, factory worker and lorry (truck) driver.
3. “Auld Lang Syne”, originally written by famous Scot Robert Burns, is the second most popular song in the world after “Happy Birthday”.
4. Scotland was the country in which golf was first played and that was in the fifteenth century.
5. Gerard Butler trained to be a lawyer at Glasgow University before becoming a famous actor.
6. Edinburgh was built on seven hills, just like Rome.
7. Edinburgh was the first city in the world to have a fire brigade.
8. According to the census conducted in 1909, the Scots were the tallest race in Europe.
9. Scotland includes 787 islands.
10. Scotland has the highest proportion of red heads in the world. Thirteen percent of its population is redheads.
