Niagara Falls is known for the many daredevils who have attempted stunts in its thundering waters.

The first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel was a 63-year-old retired schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor.

In her custom-made barrel, Taylor completed her stunt — conceived of as a way to garner some fame and make some retirement money — on October 24, 1901.

Amazing what we mere mortals will do!
