Chums Choice – Belfast
Its almost time for that most famous Irish holiday…St Patricks Day. Time to celebrate the Irish. But even if it wasn’t we would be telling you about this lovely film…Belfast.
The film Belfast is a semi-autobiographical story of its writer and director, Kenneth Branagh. It’s the story…his story…of growing up in Northern Ireland in a time when Catholic and Protestant rebels were at great odds with one another. But neighbors and families looked after and cared for one another regardless of the church they attended or how or when they were baptized. There was great love set against the hatred and violence of the time. The story is told through the eyes of a “wee small boy”, Buddy, who loved his family and as a Protestant still loved a sweet little blonde Catholic girl in his class. It is the story of the innocence and love of a child set against the anger and violence of so many adults who were bent on destroying what made them all better people and held them together, their community.
Nominated this year for an Academy Award for Best Picture, this one is a must see. It is honest, it is good, it is sweet and as such it is just plain refreshing and totally enjoyable. You can find and stream to watch it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, or You Tube, or it is in theaters. However you choose to see it, we hope you will do it soon. We think you will be happy you did.
