And For Friday, What Do We Call a Group of Owls?
What an amazing bird with wings outstretched! But what are many of these beautiful birds called?
Traditionally a group of owls is referred to as “a parliament of owls.”
These collective nouns developed in England during the later Middle Ages and were known as “nouns of assembly.” By the 1200s, books containing lists of all the collective nouns for birds and animals began to be produced.
More recently, new terms have been invented, such as “a gaze of raccoons” or “a squabble of seagulls.”
The term “a parliament of owls” was popularized in the 1950s when it was included in C. S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” series.
Have a great weekend!
