We found a few English words that are commonly mis-pronounced here in the United States and thought we would share them with you.

With the upcoming wedding of Princess Eugenie on October 12, this one is of high importance!

The Wrong Way: You-JEAN-ee
The Right Way: YOU-juh-knee

Sussex

The Wrong Way: Suss-ex
The Right Way: SUSS-icks

Viscount

The Wrong Way: Viss-count
The Right Way: Vie-count

Edinburgh

The Wrong Way: Ed-in-burg
The Right Way: Ed-in-burr-uh

Mountbatten

The Wrong Way: Mownt-bah-en
The Right Way: Mownt-BAT-uhn

Prince Louis

The Wrong Way: Loo-iss
The Right Way: Loo-wee

Hertfordshire

The Wrong Way: Hert-ford-shire
The Right Way: Hart-ford-shur

Berkshire

The Wrong Way: Berk-shire
The Right Way: Bark-shur

Worcestershire (as a County but also, there is that wonderful sauce named after it)

The Wrong Way: Wor-ces-ter-shire
The Right Way: Wus-ter-shire or most people say simply, Wus-ter sauce.

Well, there certainly are a lot of them.   We have just tipped the iceberg, as they say!

It takes us back to that wonderful film, My Fair Lady when Professor Higgins is teaching Eliza, “In Hertford, Hereford, and Hampshire, Hurricanes hardly ever happen”!
