A Laugh and A Smile
All of us seem to watching more TV these days while at home more than we’re used to being. If you are anything like your Two Chums you are probably always on the lookout for something interesting, or uplifting, to watch on television.
Generally speaking,we both enjoy historical programs, or biographical shows that showcase a time, or person or persons, of historically significance. But sometimes, as we’ve noted before, laughter is the best medicine for whatever ails you, even if, (or especially if), what ails you is boredom or discouragement on the world situation.
Sometime ago we told you about Heartland, a family drama produced in Canada. Today we want to tell you about another Canadian treasure. This one is a family comedy called “Schitt’s Creek”. You can find it on Netflix. It wrapped up this year and aired its final episode after 6 very successful seasons. It is quirky, funny, charming, with sometimes outrageous situations. Yet there are always characters who quickly become very endearing and stories that are heartwarming all while making you laugh right out loud.
The premise of the story is that of an extremely wealthy family, the Roses, (husband, John, wife, Moira, grown son, David and grown daughter, Alexis) who fall on hard times and lose virtually everything except what they can put in their very expensive luggage, when their financial manager embezzles their fortune and leaves them penniless. And along with their fortune also goes all their friends and social connections. It turns out the only thing they have to their name is a gift that John once gave his son, David, as a gag gift. The gift was a small rundown little town called Schitt’s Creek. The mayor of the town arranges for the Roses to have rooms at the local Schitt’s Creek Motel as their new residence. The relationships between these 4 family members as they navigate their “new normal” and learn to establish bonds with each other and the people of Schitt’s Creek makes for very enjoyable entertainment and a happy distraction from the “new normal” we all find ourselves in these days.
One report described this show like this:
“In this series, it’s the evolution that matters, not the premise. The pilot episode is not at all representative of the run as a whole — it’s a true starting point. The satisfaction lies in watching the Rose family — wig-obsessed former soap opera star Moira (Catherine O’Hara), stalwart but overwhelmed Johnny (Eugene Levy), bubbly and bratty socialite Alexis (Annie Murphy) and sarcastic fashionista David (Daniel Levy) — adjust to their circumstances over time, reluctantly reconnecting with one another and striving to find themselves outside of the protective bubble of their wealth. Even better, they come to see that their status stunted them, preventing them from revealing the passionate, kind, loving people they turn out to be — and in some ways, always were.”
Make it a point this weekend to visit Schitt’s Creek and get to know the Roses. We think you’ll be very glad you did 🙂
