A Korean Glow
What do Korean women (and men) know about how to get and keep a healthy glow? This may surprise you…it did us…but the surprise “technique” that Koreans use is simple. They slap themselves into beauty. We aren’t kidding.
Recently, we read an article written by a popular Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who had visited a spa in L.A.’s Koreatown with his wife. They apparently came away feeling very refreshed, but the big takeaway was witnessing both men and women relaxing in the hot tub and slapping themselves around their faces and necks. The doctor couldn’t resist asking a man who appeared to be about 50 years old what he was doing and why. The gentleman explained to the surgeon that by “slapping” himself he was opening up his pores on a deeper level and allowing the blood flow to give him a healthy glow. He also mentioned, though he didn’t look a day over 50, he was actually 74 years old!
After meeting up with his wife (the spa was segregated for men and women) the surgeon learned that his wife had experienced the same thing with the Korean women she had been relaxing with on the women’s side of the spa. Fascinated, the surgeon did some research and found that applying your moisturizer or face cream and then patting or slapping your face causes the moisturizer to be absorbed more quickly and penetrate to a deep level. This is due to a stronger blood circulation that is created and the “slapping” actually opening the pores more effectively. We should explain here that by “slapping” we are talking about using your four fingers and smacking yourself hard enough to cause a tight stinging sensation but not so hard that it actually hurts or leaves a mark. Your face and neck will be slightly red at first but that redness will disappear and is quickly replaced by a healthy “glow”.
Koreans mean business when it comes to their beauty regimes. Seoul, South Korea has the most plastic surgery of anywhere in the world!!!
South Korean men and women take beauty and skincare VERY seriously. And when you think about it, by and large Korean people have lovely skin and are generally very healthy and youthful looking.
So, suffice it to say that along with love, joy, and abundant living, there is bound to be some slapping….and hopefully glowing skin…in our futures. How about you? Are you ready to “glow”? 🙂

This made me slap my knee!! Great article. And, yes, I can attest to the fact that most Koreans (especially women) are obsessed with obtaining that perfect complexion!
You and your mother certainly are evidence of the beautiful skin of Korean women!
