12 Years A Slave
What a powerful film this is!Every now and agin there is a movie that stays with you long after you leave the theatre. This is just that kind of movie. Based on the true story of a free black man, Solomon Northup, who is tricked and then kidnapped and wakes up in a cell chained and being sold into slavery. No one will listen to who he really is ….worse…no one cares.
Watching the inhumanity that took place during that era and is so sadly a part of our nation’s history, makes clear what each of us is capable of though we might like to think otherwise. There always have been, and I suppose always will be, cruel and even evil people in the world. But good people who turned away from doing what was right out of fear were perhaps the hardest thing to reconcile.
Still this is far more than a film about injustice and slavery. To me it is a film about perseverance and hope and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is worth every penny you will spend. I can highly recommend it and hope you will see it soon.
I expect it to be honored at this years Academy Awards….it surely should be!
