Tomahawk Steak
As promised yesterday, here is our pick for a delicious way to celebrate Dad this Sunday 🙂 Because most of our family was scheduled to be out of town this Sunday, my family celebrated Father’s Day this past weekend. My 13 year old grandson, Jeremy asked to help make dinner. We chose some amazing prime beef tomahawk steaks we found at Costco! Each steak was large enough to serve 3 people nicely.
Tomahawk steaks are actually very large, very thick cut ribeye steaks with the full rib bone still attached. Because of the length of the rib bone in relation to the meat attached, the steak has the appearance of being a tomahawk…thus the name.
Jeremy not only helped me cook the steaks, he took it upon himself to create a sauce to serve with them. After doing some extensive research on line he came up with his own recipe for a Whiskey Sauce. I can honestly say these were some of the best steaks I’ve ever eaten and the sauce was truly delicious! The sauce could be served with any steak you like if you can’t find tomahawk steaks. But if you can, they are worth every cent you pay. And after all, isn’t Dad worth the extra cost anyway?
Tomahawk Steak with Whiskey Sauce
Preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to a cast iron or heavy bottomed skillet and heat on high just until the pan is sizzling hot. Pat the steak dry with paper towels and liberally sprinkle Lawry’s Seasoned Salt to both sides. Add the steak to the hot pan and slightly lower the flame. Cook over the medium high heat to allow the meat to brown and form a crust on the outside. This will take about 3-5 minutes depending on the kind of pan you are using. Flip the steak and brown it on the other side. If you are doing more than one steak, place the seared steak in a large roasting pan and repeat the browning process with the remaining steaks. Place them all in the roasting pan. If you only are making one steak you can continue to cook it in the skillet you browned it in provided it is cast iron or at least oven safe. Place the steaks in the 500 degree oven and cook for about 15 minutes without opening the oven door for a medium rare steak. After 15 minutes pour the sauce over the steak and continue cooking for 5 more minutes. (If you are only cooking one steak 2 minutes should be enough time to cook before adding the sauce.) Remove the steaks from the hot oven and serve immediately. Pour some of the sauce from the pan over the steak and put the rest in a pitcher to pass alongside the steaks.
Jeremy’s Whiskey Sauce
2/3 cup Jack Daniels
1 cup water
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 stick butter
Place butter in a pan and melt. Whisk all the other ingredients together and add to the butter. Simmer over a medium flame until the sauce reduces and begins to slightly thicken. Start the sauce before you begin cooking the steaks. That way the sauce should be ready when the steaks are ready to have the sauce poured over them and then placed back in the oven.
We promise, EVERYONE will be more than satisfied and happy with these babies and Dad will feel very celebrated indeed!
Way to go, Jeremy!
